Elizabeth "Bette" Pegues Hayes, 84, of Montgomery, AL, joined her heavenly Father on September 7, 2016. Surviving is her husband of over 61 years, Col USAF (Ret) Robert Kenneth Hayes; children, Elizabeth Leigh Wiatt (Streeter, Jr.), Montgomery, Robert Kenneth Hayes, Jr, (Sharon), Cleveland, TN, Anne Pegues Gass (Daniel) Knoxville, TN; Grandchildren, James Streeter Wiatt III (Carrie) Southern Seminary, Louisville, KY, Elizabeth Owen Wiatt, Birmingham, AL, Emily Alston Wiatt, Samford University, Birmingham, Elizabeth Anne Gass, Knoxville, TN, William Daniel Gass, University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and great grandchild, Charlotte Camellia Wiatt. Elizabeth "Bette" Pegues Hayes, 84, of Montgomery, AL, joined her heavenly Father on September 7, 2016. Surviving is her husband of over 61 years, Col USAF (Ret) Robert Kenneth Hayes; children, Elizabeth Leigh Wiatt (Streeter, Jr.), Montgomery, Robert Kenneth Hayes, Jr, (Sharon), Cleveland, TN, Anne Pegues Gass (Daniel) Knoxville, TN; Grandchildren, James Streeter Wiatt III (Carrie) Southern Seminary, Louisville, KY, Elizabeth Owen Wiatt, Birmingham, AL, Emily Alston Wiatt, Samford University, Birmingham, Elizabeth Anne Gass, Knoxville, TN, William Daniel Gass, University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and great grandchild, Charlotte Camellia Wiatt. Bette was born on April 17, 1932, to Dr. Clarence Leigh Pegues and Emily Elizabeth Statham of Marion, AL. She was predeceased by her brother, R. Leigh Pegues. Bette graduated from Judson College in 1954, and on December 12, 1954, married 1/Lt Ken Hayes at Siloam Baptist Church in Marion. Bette was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Montgomery and an active member of many historical, genealogical, and patriotic societies. Pallbearers are nephews, Leigh Pegues, John Pegues, Michael Pegues, Christopher Pegues, and Grandsons, William Gass and Streeter Wiatt III. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Encouragers Bible Fellowship Class of First Baptist Church of Montgomery. Her Visitation will be Sunday, September 11, 2016, at 2PM, at Leak Memory Chapel, followed by her Life Celebration Service at 3PM, with Dr. Jay Wolf officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. . In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Judson College, Marion, AL, or to a charity of choice. Condolences may be offered at www.leak-mc.com
